Mac McAnally, a Biography.
Mac McAnally is a name now widely recognized in the world of music. However, this was not always the case. He came from humble beginnings, the son of a small town family. He grew up with a love of music that would prove to be his own personal success story.
He was born in the town of Red Bay, Alabama, on July 15, 1957, but Belmont Mississippi was where he called home. Mac did not have a large family. His parents were Lyman & Ella Mary McAnally, and he had two sisters, Lisa and Sarah. Lisa says, "He was a typical brother, pranks and all. He would stay up late and watch old movies."
Although Mac grew up in a small town, he had big ideas. He ran around with the guys like any teenage boy, and got into trouble just the same. He was a normal kid that did normal stuff. Lisa says, "I remember many times I had to step over people to get to the kitchen because Mac would just pick up strangers and bring them home. He would just pick up people and bring them home for a couple of days. My parents would feed them and share everything we had and in a few days they would move on".
At a young age he enjoyed playing music. His parents immersed their children in music. His sister Lisa remembers, " Gospel, bluegrass, country, jazz, classical, blues, rock-n-roll, you name it, we had it". He took piano from Mrs. Jean Lambert. He also took guitar from Mickey Campbell. Lisa said, "Any instrument he picked up, he could play", and "He has such a gift".
As an adult, Mac married Vicki and had three daughters, Erin, Caitlyn, and Alysson. They live in Nashville, Tennessee. Although currently divorced, Mac and Vicki still have a good relationship.
The love for music that Mac had as a young boy has given him great success today. He has written songs for many popular groups, such as Alabama, Sawyer Brown, Jimmy Buffet, Kenny Chesney, and many more. His songs are very inspiring, and full of body. These last few years have given him many awards for his talents, such as the CMA Musician of the Year for two years in a row. He was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals in 2010. There are other awards and recognitions, as well.
Mac McAnally may have been just a small town boy, but he has proven that that was no obstacle for him. He worked hard, and he followed his dreams. He used his God-given talent, and shared it with the rest of the world. The music world has been given much thru his talents, and for that, we owe him our thanks.
